Montgomerie Backs Tiger Woods for Champions Tour Success in 2026
Montgomerie Backs Tiger Woods for Champions Tour

Golf legend Tiger Woods has received a vote of confidence from British hero Colin Montgomerie, who believes the 15-time major champion could thrive on the PGA Tour Champions circuit next year.

A New Chapter for Tiger Woods

Woods, who turns 50 in December 2025, will become eligible to compete on the PGA Tour Champions starting from the 2026 season. The American icon hasn't participated in a Tour event since the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon, where he missed the cut.

Injuries have significantly limited Woods' playing time in recent years, with the 49-year-old undergoing surgery to replace a disc in his back just last month. Despite these physical challenges, the five-time Masters champion is targeting a return to professional golf next year.

Montgomerie's Enthusiastic Endorsement

Colin Montgomerie, the celebrated 2010 Ryder Cup-winning captain for Team Europe, has warmly welcomed the possibility of Woods joining the senior tour. "I think it would be super for the PGA Tour Champions if Tiger is able to play," Montgomerie stated this week.

He emphasized the broader impact, adding: "Great for sponsors, TV, etc. And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not."

From Criticism to Support

Montgomerie's current supportive stance marks a significant shift from his comments made over a year ago. In 2024, the 62-year-old Scot had openly questioned Woods' ability to compete at the highest level.

"I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was, the passion and the charismatic aura around him," Montgomerie told The Times last year. "There is none of that now. At Pinehurst, he did not seem to enjoy a single shot, and you think, 'What the hell is he doing?'"

Woods' competitive absence has seen his world ranking plummet to No. 2375 in the Official World Golf Rankings, his lowest position since turning professional in the 1990s. He continues to slide down the rankings while recovering from his latest surgery.

The golf world now watches with anticipation to see whether Woods will choose the PGA Tour Champions for his comeback or attempt a return to the main PGA Tour for the 2026 season. Many speculate he may have his sights set on the 2026 Masters at Augusta National, where he can compete thanks to his five previous victories.
