Rory McIlroy Attributes Masters Defence to Intensive Augusta Preparation

Rory McIlroy has detailed how extensive preparation at Augusta National, which he now considers his "home course," was instrumental in his successful defence of the Masters title. The Northern Irish golfer secured back-to-back victories at the prestigious tournament, overcoming significant pressure and a back injury that disrupted his competitive schedule in the lead-up.

Strategic Buildup Inspired by Golf Legend

Rather than participating in PGA Tour events before the Masters, McIlroy dedicated weeks to practising at Augusta, following advice from golfing icon Jack Nicklaus. He revealed that this focused approach allowed him to familiarise himself thoroughly with the course layout and conditions.

"I joked last week that this place feels like my home course," McIlroy stated before departing Augusta. "I haven't played anywhere else in the last two or three weeks really. I felt prepared in that way. I felt prepared that wherever I hit it on the golf course, I sort of know what to do. I know where to miss. I'm pretty comfortable with all the shots around the greens."

McIlroy emphasised the effectiveness of simulating tournament conditions during practice sessions. On one notable occasion, he reportedly played the front nine in 29 strokes using a single ball, demonstrating his mastery of the course.

Nicklaus' Blueprint for Major Success

The six-time major winner highlighted how Nicklaus' preparation methods influenced his own strategy. "It's a good blueprint," McIlroy explained. "I'm not going to take three weeks off before every major, but to get to the major venues early, do your preparation, play. And not just play and look at things, but actually play. Go out there with one ball, shoot a score and try to do it that way."

He elaborated on Nicklaus' approach: "When I've talked to Jack Nicklaus over the years, how he prepared for majors, he would go the week before and he would simulate a tournament. He'd play one ball for four days, shoot scores. So then when he got to the tournament, it felt second nature to him. I did a little bit of that and I think that's certainly a good way to prepare going into the next majors."

Historic Achievement and Future Prospects

With this victory, McIlroy joins an elite group of golfers including Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods as the only players to have retained the Green Jacket. Following his emotional 2025 Masters win, which completed his career grand slam, McIlroy believes he can now approach future majors with renewed focus and confidence.

"I was glad last year that the whole grand slam thing was done, because that was what I was chasing," McIlroy said. "And now going forward, everything is icing on the cake or a cherry on top, all gravy, whatever you want to call it. But I feel like I can just go and play my game and have a chance to win a lot more majors."

Expect to see McIlroy applying similar preparation techniques at the venues for the remaining 2026 majors: Aronimink, Shinnecock Hills, and Royal Birkdale.

Scheffler Questions Course Conditions

Scottie Scheffler, who finished one stroke behind McIlroy, expressed surprise at the course conditions during Friday's play, particularly in the afternoon when McIlroy birdied six of the final seven holes. While careful not to criticise tournament organisers directly, Scheffler hinted at inconsistencies.

"I'm not in charge of course setup," Scheffler remarked. "I would have liked it to have been a little bit more equal in terms of the firmness on Thursday and Friday. I was a bit surprised at how soft things were on Friday afternoon, especially as it got late in the day. But the weather also changes and it was a bit windy on Thursday, so who knows. That's part of the game."

McIlroy's triumph underscores the importance of meticulous preparation in elite golf, blending historical wisdom with modern athletic dedication to secure one of the sport's most coveted titles.
