Liverpool face Inter and Atletico in Champions League draw

Liverpool will face Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid among their eight opponents in the Champions League league stage after the draw was made in Monaco on Thursday evening.

Inter Milan reunion and Atletico rematch

The standout fixture sees the Reds travel to the San Siro to face Inter for the second successive season after winning there 1-0 last year. Curtis Jones, who moved to the Serie A champions earlier this month in a deal that could earn Liverpool up to £30million, will line up against his former club.

At Anfield, Liverpool will host Atletico Madrid once again, a fixture the Reds won 3-2 last season. Boss Andoni Iraola will experience his first European campaign as a manager.

Other opponents and away trips

Liverpool will also travel to Club Brugge for the first time since the 1976 UEFA Cup final, face Fenerbahce in Istanbul for the first time, and visit LASK Linz, who beat Celtic in the play-offs and whom the Reds defeated in the Europa League in 2023.

At home, Iraola's side also entertain Villarreal, French side Lens, and Porto, who last visited Anfield in 2021.

Format and fixture dates

The top eight teams in the 36-strong league table automatically qualify for the knockout stages, with the next 16 facing a two-legged play-off. The bottom 12 teams are eliminated from European competition altogether.

Fixture dates will be confirmed by Saturday at the latest to avoid clashes with teams in the Europa League and Europa Conference League playing in the same cities.
