Tameside council's executive cabinet has approved moving forward with plans for a new pump track at Victoria Street Playing Fields in Hyde. The track would be a loop of bumps, raised angles and obstacles.
Community benefits and next steps
Once built, it is hoped the track would provide a free and accessible community facility, supporting physical activity and helping develop cycling skills. The council's latest approval means it will commission a detailed feasibility study, develop proposals for the site and submit an application to Sport England for funding. This will include engagement with local residents and groups to shape the development of the pump track.
Council support and partnerships
Tameside council's executive member for population health and wellbeing, Coun Michael Smith said: "Cycling has so many benefits for people of all ages."
"This pump track will give residents the opportunity to learn new skills, consider active travel, meet up with friends or meet new people while increasing confidence with off-road cycling."
"Manchester Bike Kitchen, alongside other local organisations and community partners, will be a key part in planning the use of track as trusted and established voices in Tameside's cycling community.''
Strategic alignment and location
The proposal supports the delivery of the Let's Ride Tameside Strategy and Tameside Moving Strategy. The track will be located close to the Tame Valley Loop, and will enhance the local offer for cycling, providing a hub to access these off-road routes with minimal need to ride with traffic.
