London City Lionesses are preparing for their inaugural Women's Super League campaign after earning promotion from the Championship. The club, based in south London, will face the top tier for the first time in their history.
Promotion and Squad Changes
The Lionesses secured their place in the WSL by finishing second in the Championship last season. Manager Carolina Morace has overseen a squad overhaul, bringing in several new signings to strengthen the team for the challenges ahead.
Key additions include goalkeeper Shae Yanez, defenders Grace Fisk and Megan Campbell, and midfielder Lucy Watson. The club has also retained captain Lois Roche and forward Amy Rodgers, who were instrumental in the promotion push.
Season Expectations
Morace has set a target of avoiding relegation, aiming for a mid-table finish in their debut season. The club's ownership, led by Michele Kang, has invested heavily in facilities and playing staff, signalling long-term ambitions.
The Lionesses will play their home games at Hayes Lane, the stadium they share with Bromley FC. Their opening fixture is against Aston Villa on September 6, followed by a home match against Leicester City.
Challenges Ahead
The jump from the Championship to the WSL is significant, with the top flight featuring established clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City. London City will need to adapt quickly to the increased pace and physicality of the league.
Despite the challenges, the club's management is optimistic about the squad's potential. Morace has emphasised the importance of defensive solidity and quick transitions, believing the team can compete if they execute their game plan effectively.
