Drivers across the North East face a series of road closures and temporary traffic lights this week, with works ranging from gas main repairs to a major flyover demolition in Gateshead.
Newcastle closures and traffic lights
Temporary traffic lights are in place on B1600 Forth Banks at Hawthorn Square until 17:00 on 31st August, and on Buddle Road in Elswick around St Johns Road until 7th September due to gas main work.
Heaton Park View is affected by gas main works between Tintern Crescent and Heaton Road until 9th September, while Station Road in Newburn is closed between A6085 High Street and Newburn Bridge Road until 11th September.
In Shieldfield, temporary lights are on B1600 Portland Road around Warwick Street until 14th September, and on A193 Shields Road at Stotts Road until 18th September. Heaton Road at Heaton Park View sees lights until 7th October.
Long-term closures in Newcastle
Market Street Eastbound is closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street until 9th October, and Worswick Street remains closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square until 10th April 2027.
Pottery Lane is closed from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane until 31st March 2027, and Whitehouse Road in Scotswood is closed between Armstrong Road and Walwick Fell until 18th July 2027.
The A167 Tyne Bridge has a lane closed with a 30 mph speed restriction and narrow lanes in both directions from Newcastle to Church Street, Gateshead, until 16th June 2028.
Gateshead and North Tyneside works
Carr Hill Road in Deckham is closed between the B1296 and Millway until 2nd September, and the A194 Leam Lane has lane closures and temporary lights between Mill Lane and the A194(M) J3 roundabout until 10th September.
High Street Southbound in Gateshead is closed from Nuns Lane to the A184 until 25th September, while the A167 Gateshead Highway is closed in both directions for demolition of the flyover between B1426 High Street West and Hawks Road until 18th May 2027.
In North Tyneside, Kings Road in Wallsend is closed northbound from Battle Hill Drive to Warkworth Avenue until 1st September, and temporary lights are on Earsdon Road in Shiremoor until 2nd September.
South Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham
Inverness Road in South Tyneside is closed between Perth Avenue and Iona Road until 8th September, with temporary lights on B1298 Abingdon Way and Didcot Way in Boldon Colliery until 18th December.
Sunderland sees Elmwood Avenue in Southwick closed from North Hylton Road to Oaklands Crescent until 2nd September, and temporary lights on Dovedale Road in Seaburn until 2nd September.
County Durham has multiple temporary lights and closures, including on Benfieldside Road in Shotley Bridge until 1st September, and on A167 Durham Road between Windsor Road and Devon Crescent until 28th September. Framwelgate Waterside in Durham has narrow lanes in both directions until 31st December 2027.
