Newly crowned world snooker champion Wu Yize has revealed his heartwarming plans for the £500,000 prize money he earned after defeating Shaun Murphy 10-6 at The Crucible. The 22-year-old Chinese star said he intends to buy a house and take his parents travelling.
Speaking to SportsBoom, Wu said: “Buy a house and take my parents travelling. There are many things I’d like to buy. My parents are the true champions. They are the source of my strength. I love them so much.” He also admitted that after a nerve-wracking match, his immediate priority is rest: “I just want to have a good sleep.”
Wu highlighted the importance of his mother, who has been battling health issues. “My mum wasn't in very good health condition for a long time. During that time we were in Sheffield, she has been in hospital a lot. She is forever a source of strength to me,” he said. He added that his mother sacrificed everything for his career, telling him not to return home during a crucial period when his ranking was low.
Jason Ferguson, chairman of snooker’s governing body, praised Wu’s achievement, calling him “outstanding” and noting the struggles his family faced to reach this stage. “You cannot believe what it means to that family to actually be in that arena holding that trophy. It's quite an incredible moment,” Ferguson said.
