US Soccer Leaders Forecast World Cup to Surpass Super Bowl by 100-Fold
United States soccer authorities have made a bold assertion that the upcoming 2026 World Cup will be "100 times" larger than the Super Bowl in terms of audience engagement. This statement comes as they prepare to host the tournament across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, aiming to capitalise on unprecedented global interest.
Record-Breaking Viewership Projections
Lex Chalat, the executive director of the Soccer Forward Foundation, emphasised the scale of this prediction during a recent FT Live event. He projected that the World Cup's viewership would equate to 100 Super Bowls, highlighting a dramatic increase from the Super Bowl's recent audience of 125 million viewers, with an all-time high of 137 million. Chalat anticipates billions of viewers worldwide will tune in this summer, marking a significant milestone for football in the United States.
Building on Past Successes
Chalat referenced the transformative impact of the 1994 World Cup and the 1999 Women's World Cup, which spurred growth in players, coaches, and overall fandom. He stated, "We're expecting a 50 percent increase of fandom as a result." The focus is on leveraging this event to maximise exposure for the sport, particularly in the US, where football has historically faced competition from other major sports.
City-Led Hosting and Social Impact
The 2026 World Cup is being organised with a unique city-led approach, where local communities are actively involved in planning to ensure economic and social benefits. Chalat explained, "This will be a first for us in how we host it, which is city led, they all are locally looking at how this will be relevant to them." The Soccer Forward Foundation aims to use this platform to drive social impact, enhancing the sport's legacy beyond mere viewership numbers.
Global Growth and Future Prospects
With the tournament set to be the biggest major sporting event globally, US soccer chiefs are confident it will attract new audiences and solidify football's position in American culture. Chalat added, "We're trying to leverage that uniqueness, that growth and incredible growth of viewership of the game globally." This initiative seeks to build on past successes and foster long-term development in the sport across all levels.
