Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace for a fee of £10 million. The move marks the first part of a £32 million double deal on deadline day, with Brazilian midfielder Andre expected to follow from Fluminense for £22 million.
Johnstone, who refused a new contract at Selhurst Park, had been demoted by Palace manager Oliver Glasner, with Dean Henderson taking the No.1 spot. The 31-year-old returns to the West Midlands, where he will reunite with goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, with whom he previously worked at Aston Villa.
“I’m absolutely buzzing. I’m finally here, excited to get going and I can't wait to put on the shirt,” Johnstone said. “It's a massive club... I've also worked with Neil Cutler – the goalie coach – before, who I love working with.”
Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs expressed delight at securing an international goalkeeper with extensive Premier League experience. “It’s an area of the pitch we wanted to add more competition,” Hobbs said. While Hobbs spoke of competition, it is understood manager Gary O’Neil is keen to make Johnstone the new first choice, potentially replacing Jose Sa, who could depart for Saudi Arabia.
Andre, a Brazil international who won the Copa Libertadores last year, said his goodbyes to Fluminense teammates before flying to London overnight. Wolves remain in the market for a centre-half and an attacking addition, though Burnley have placed a £40 million price tag on target Luca Koleosho.
