A basketball game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Indiana Fever was briefly stopped after a fan threw a sex toy onto the court, appearing to hit or land near Fever player Sophie Cunningham. The incident occurred during a free-throw attempt by Sparks guard Kelsey Plum, who then kicked the object to the baseline. Security quickly removed the toy and investigated the area where the fan was seen throwing it.
This is the third time a sex toy has been thrown during a WNBA match in recent weeks, but the first instance where a player has been struck or nearly struck. Cunningham had previously voiced concerns on social media, writing: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.” Despite her plea, the latest incident occurred, though no injury was reported.
The WNBA has issued a statement condemning such behaviour, warning that any fan who throws an object onto the court will be ejected, face a minimum one-year ban, and may be subject to arrest. In a previous incident involving the Golden State Valkyries, a fan was arrested on charges including disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.
