Yoane Wissa has spoken publicly for the first time about being named in Newcastle United's new five-man leadership group this season, acknowledging that "times are tough" as he works to rediscover his scoring form. The DR Congo international forward was selected by head coach Matthias Jaissle earlier in the campaign.
Wissa joins captain Dan Burn, vice-captain Joelinton, as well as Malick Thiaw and Lewis Miley in the leadership group. The appointment followed a positive start to the season in which the 30-year-old scored against Tottenham, appearing rejuvenated after a difficult first year on Tyneside following his £55million move from Brentford.
Leadership Role and Early-Season Form
Club insiders indicated that Wissa returned in excellent physical condition after a positive World Cup campaign with his country. Jaissle reportedly felt the forward had a positive impact on the club's younger players around the training ground, leading to his inclusion in the leadership group.
Wissa faced criticism after struggling for goals in his debut season. Injury kept him out for his first three months at Newcastle, and he finished the campaign with just three goals in all competitions.
Current Goal Drought and Team Impact
He is now enduring another goal drought, having not scored in 10 matches, and has missed clear chances in the last two home defeats to Villa and Everton. He has lost his place in the side to Will Osula.
Writing in Newcastle United's official matchday programme, Wissa said: "This is my first time writing to you after being chosen as part of the team's Leadership Group this season, which is a role I was very happy and proud to be given."
"It is a new role for me and I know the head coach has trust in me to bring energy and positivity, and of course most importantly, try to score goals and help the team win games."
Staying Positive and Looking Ahead
"When times are tough, I try to talk to the guys and be positive in every moment, because we have a young squad. But we know that we have a lot of quality and we just need to focus on that and make sure that everyone stays together because not everything is black and white," he added.
"We need to find the right balance, mentally and physically, to get results. We must be united as a squad and also channel the energy of our fans."
Wissa will look to score his second goal of the season on Saturday when Newcastle travel to West London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage.
