Wigan Warriors survived a major scare to beat Wakefield Trinity 28-22 in a golden point thriller in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, setting up a mouthwatering semi-final against St Helens. The match, played at Belle Vue, saw Wakefield take an early 12-0 lead through tries from Jake Trueman and Ky Rodwell, but Wigan fought back to level before half-time.
A key moment came when Wakefield forward Jazz Tevaga was sin-binned for kicking Liam Marshall, allowing Wigan to take a 16-12 lead into the break. Tries from Harry Smith and Zach Eckersley extended the Warriors' lead to 22-16 before Tevaga's return helped Wakefield level through Cam Scott's try.
The final quarter was tense, but Eckersley's second try proved decisive as Wigan held their nerve. Wakefield coach Daryl Powell refused to blame Tevaga, saying, 'I'm not going to blame Jazz for the loss, I think that's important.' Wigan coach Matt Peet praised the contest, calling it 'a great game for the neutrals.'
Wigan will now face St Helens in the semi-finals, while holders Hull KR take on Warrington Wolves in the other tie. Wakefield, who have not won a major trophy since the 1960s, showed they are a force to be reckoned with under new investment and a renovated stadium.
