Wigan Warriors delivered a stunning performance to defeat St Helens 32-0 in the Challenge Cup semi-final, advancing to the final for the 34th time in the club's history. The victory was a commanding response to recent struggles, as Wigan had lost four consecutive Super League matches before this emphatic triumph.
Dominant Display from the Warriors
Despite entering the match as underdogs against their fierce rivals, Wigan controlled proceedings from the outset. Jack Farrimond opened the scoring with an early try, and the Warriors added three more before halftime through Zach Eckersley (two tries) and Jake Wardle, who intercepted a loose pass to score on the stroke of the interval. Wigan led 22-0 at the break.
St Helens, who sit joint-top of Super League and had won five straight games, offered little in attack. The loss of captain Matty Lees to injury in the opening tackle was a blow, but Saints lacked creativity throughout, failing to breach Wigan's resolute defense.
Second-Half Decimation
Wigan continued their dominance after the restart, adding two more tries in the final minutes through Farrimond and Adam Keighran to seal a comprehensive 32-0 victory. The result sets up a Wembley final against either Hull KR or Warrington Wolves on 30 May.
Warriors head coach Matt Peet expressed confidence before the match, saying: "I woke up this morning and it's the most confident I'd felt for a few years. The desire to really turn up for one another, get the job done and make some special efforts was brilliant."
St Helens coach Paul Rowley was left to rue his side's performance: "The big moments, we'll look back at it and look at the tries we conceded and be disappointed. But we'll also be disappointed by the fact we didn't put ourselves in the picture by having enough excitement and energy at the right times."
Wigan's victory was built on a ruthless first-half spell of nine minutes where they scored three tries, effectively ending the contest. The Warriors now have the chance to extend their record of 22 Challenge Cup final wins if they maintain this form.
