West Ham United have dismissed manager Nuno Espirito Santo with immediate effect, a day before their Championship fixture against Cardiff City. The Portuguese head coach leaves following consecutive defeats to Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, which have put the club's automatic promotion hopes in jeopardy.
Club confirms departure of coaching staff
Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa have also left the London club. West Ham confirmed that former captain Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will oversee preparations for the trip to the Welsh capital.
The decision follows mounting speculation about Nuno's future, with reports indicating that influential shareholder Daniel Křetínský had grown frustrated with the team's performances. The club has announced that the recruitment of a successor is already underway.
Official statement from West Ham United
In a statement, West Ham United said: "West Ham United can confirm that men's first-team Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect."
"Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the Club's objectives and expectations remain on track," the statement continued.
"Assistant Head Coach Rui Pedro Silva and Goalkeeper Coach Rui Barbosa have also departed. West Ham United would like to thank Nuno, Rui and Rui for their hard work and commitment during their time at the Club, and wish them all the very best for the future."
The statement added: "The process of recruiting a new Head Coach is already under way. Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge of squad preparations ahead of tomorrow evening's EFL Championship fixture at Cardiff City, and the Club will make no further comment until the appointment of the new Head Coach is confirmed."
Cardiff's own selection problems
The timing leaves West Ham facing the trip to south Wales without a permanent manager or the coaching staff who led their preparations throughout the campaign. Reports on Monday suggested discussions over potential replacements were already taking place.
For Cardiff, the upheaval adds another layer to an already significant Championship encounter. Barry-Murphy's side are aiming to respond to their 3-0 defeat at Wolves on Saturday, but they face considerable selection issues of their own.
Defensive injuries have left Cardiff severely depleted, with Dylan Lawlor and Calum Chambers sidelined until after the November international break and Gabriel Osho still suspended. There are fresh fitness concerns over Will Fish, Perry Ng and Alex Robertson following the loss at Molineux, while the availability of Isaak Davies remains uncertain.
Cardiff finished Saturday's game with midfielder Joel Colwill and winger Ollie Tanner operating as emergency full-backs, highlighting the extent of the problems facing Barry-Murphy. The Bluebirds will now face a West Ham side dealing with major upheaval, with the visitors having just one day to adjust to the departure of their manager and two senior coaches.
West Ham's search for a permanent successor is already underway, but Noble, Potts and Prenderville will be tasked with guiding the club through Wednesday evening's match at Cardiff City Stadium.
