Wembley vs Nou Camp: UEFA to Pick 2029 Champions League Final Venue
Wembley vs Nou Camp for 2029 Champions League Final

Wembley Stadium could host the Champions League final for a ninth time as UEFA prepares to choose between England's national stadium and Barcelona's revamped Nou Camp for the 2029 showpiece.

Bidding Process

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish government has thrown its weight behind Barcelona's bid to host the men's Champions League final in three years. Additionally, Spain is backing Bilbao to host the women's final at Athletic Club's San Mames ground in 2028. Wembley submitted its bid late last year, and UEFA's executive committee will select one of the two venues at a meeting on September 15.

Stadium Details

Spain, set to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco, hopes to showcase the modernised 105,000-capacity Nou Camp, which is due to be completed next year at a cost of more than £1.1 billion. Barcelona spent two seasons away from the iconic 99,354-seat stadium before returning in November last year at a reduced capacity of around 45,000. In March, they opened more sections, raising capacity to 62,652 as they cruised to the La Liga title. Final work is set to be completed by 2027.

History of Finals

Wembley previously hosted finals in 1963, 1968, 1971, 1978, 1992, 2011, 2013, and 2024, with Real Madrid the most recent victors, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 for their 15th title. In contrast, the Nou Camp has hosted the final only twice: AC Milan's 4-0 win over Steaua Bucharest in 1989 and Manchester United's famous stoppage-time comeback against Bayern Munich in 1999.
