Vinicius Jr double sends Real Madrid past 10-man Man City

Real Madrid secured their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, completing a 5-1 aggregate win. Vinicius Junior scored twice, either side of an Erling Haaland equaliser, to end City's hopes of progression.

The match turned in the 22nd minute when City captain Bernardo Silva handled a shot from Vinicius, conceding a penalty and receiving a red card. Vinicius converted the spot-kick to give Madrid the lead. Despite being reduced to 10 men, City pushed forward and Haaland levelled with a well-taken goal, but Vinicius struck again in the second half to restore Madrid's advantage.

City registered 22 shots in a spirited attempt to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit, but missed chances and Madrid's composure proved decisive. It was the fourth time in five seasons that Pep Guardiola's side have been eliminated by the Spanish giants, leaving them to rue their first-half performance in the previous leg.
