Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) claimed his second victory in three days at the Giro d'Italia, winning stage nine on Sunday. The Dane surged ahead in the final kilometre of the 184 km route from Cervia to Corno alle Scale, leaving race rival Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) behind after the Austrian had attacked near the summit.
Vingegaard's teammate Davide Piganzoli finished third, while Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) rode bravely to limit his losses, crossing the line fifth, 41 seconds behind the stage winner. Eulalio retains the overall lead and the pink jersey.
Ireland's Darren Rafferty (EF Education - EasyPost) placed 82nd on the stage, with Ryan Mullen (NSN Cycling Team) finishing 136th.
Following Monday's rest day, the riders will face a 42 km individual time trial from Viareggio to Massa on stage 10.
