Max Verstappen secured a commanding victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, further solidifying his lead in the Formula One drivers' championship. The Red Bull driver crossed the finish line first at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.
Dominant Performance by Verstappen
Verstappen started from pole position and controlled the race from start to finish, leading for the majority of the 71 laps. His win marks his fifth victory of the 2026 season and extends his advantage in the standings to 34 points over his nearest rival, Leclerc. According to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, "Max was in a league of his own today. The car was perfect, and he executed the strategy flawlessly."
Key Battles and Retirements
The race saw several intense battles further down the field. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari retired early due to a hydraulic issue, while Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull fought back from a poor start to finish fourth. Lando Norris of McLaren secured fifth place after a late-race duel with George Russell of Mercedes.
Verstappen's average speed was recorded at 232.5 km/h, the fastest of any driver, and he set the fastest lap of the race on lap 58. His victory also marked Red Bull's 100th win in Formula One, a milestone celebrated by the team.
Championship Implications
With the win, Verstappen now has 178 points in the drivers' championship, compared to Leclerc's 144 and Hamilton's 128. The result also strengthens Red Bull's position in the constructors' standings, where they lead Ferrari by 52 points. The next race is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in two weeks.
