Former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis has died at the age of 35. He was found dead on Monday, April 1, at a home in South Florida belonging to his grandmother, Adaline Davis. The Davie Police Department has stated there is no indication of foul play, but the Broward County medical examiner's office is investigating.
Davis played for the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills after being drafted in 2009. He retired in 2018, famously walking off the field mid-game. The NFL and his former teams paid tribute, with the league saying: 'The NFL is heartbroken to hear about the passing of Vontae Davis. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.'
He is survived by his older brother, Vernon Davis, also a former NFL star who played for the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Washington Commanders. Vernon, 40, posted a tribute on social media, and Vontae had previously praised him as a father in an Instagram post last June.
Vontae was married to Megan Harpe, a family law attorney. They met in Washington D.C., became engaged in 2013, and married in 2015 in Puerto Rico. It is unclear if they had children. Davis had spoken openly about a difficult upbringing, with a mother addicted to drugs and an alcoholic father. He was raised by his grandmother along with six siblings.
In his final Instagram post on March 25, Davis promoted his children's book, The Middle School Rules of Vontae Davis, writing: 'Excited to share my journey from DC to where I am today.' He also ran a luxury transportation company, Davis Hospitality Group.
