The Premier League has explained why two goals were allowed to stand following VAR checks during Sunday's 2-2 draw between Fulham and Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Both Florian Wirtz for Liverpool and Harry Wilson for Fulham had initial offside flags overturned after video reviews.
Wilson put Fulham ahead in the 17th minute with a finish past Alisson, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside. VAR checked the decision and determined that Virgil van Dijk had been playing Wilson onside, and the goal was awarded.
Liverpool equalised in the 57th minute through Wirtz, who swept home Conor Bradley's pass. Again, the offside flag went up, but the Premier League Match Centre confirmed that VAR established Wirtz was onside and recommended the goal stand.
Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer expressed surprise, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: 'Looking at replays of that Liverpool goal, every frame that they stop at it looks offside. It's a strange one.'
Both overturned decisions were extremely close, with VAR ensuring the correct outcomes despite the assistant referees' initial errors. Liverpool thought they had won the game when Cody Gakpo scored in added time, but Harrison Reed equalised with a stunning long-range strike in the 97th minute to earn Fulham a point.
