The incident began when Orange County Fire Authority paramedics responded to a report of a man behaving erratically outside a shopping centre in the city of Mission Viejo. What initially appeared to be a standard welfare check rapidly escalated into a life-threatening situation.
The assailant, identified as 32-year-old Jesse Avalos, allegedly produced a knife and stabbed one of the emergency medical technicians in the neck before seizing control of the emergency vehicle. The wounded EMT, though injured, is expected to survive the traumatic attack.
