A man has been arrested after stealing an ambulance while paramedics were attending to a victim in a fatal stabbing near a high school in California, police have said.
Officers were called to Downey Public Library, southeast of Los Angeles, on Saturday following a report of a stabbing. Witnesses said an argument broke out before one man pulled out a knife and stabbed another. The victim died at the scene.
The stabbing suspect, described as a 23-year-old homeless man, fled on foot towards a local high school. He was taken into custody on the locked-down campus.
While paramedics were treating the victim, another man stole the ambulance parked at the library. Police pursued the vehicle in a chase that ended about 40 minutes north in Alhambra, where the ambulance crashed into a parked vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The suspect, aged 52, was arrested at the scene. Witnesses said he was screaming as officers took him into custody. Police confirmed the two incidents are not connected.
