Michael van Gerwen sent a powerful message to his rivals at the PDC World Darts Championship, rediscovering his best form to power into the third round. The Dutchman's commanding performance came on a dramatic night at Alexandra Palace that saw former champions Peter Wright and Danny Noppert sensationally eliminated.
Van Gerwen's Ominous Return to Form
After a laboured opening victory, the three-time world champion looked back to his formidable best against William O'Connor. Van Gerwen secured a convincing 3-1 win, displaying the kind of heavy scoring and clinical finishing that has defined his career.
This was a significant statement from the Dutchman, who has endured a challenging period both on and off the oche throughout 2025. While Luke Littler and Luke Humphries remain the tournament favourites, Van Gerwen's display served as a stark reminder that he remains a serious contender for the Sid Waddell Trophy.
Shock Exits for Wright and Noppert
The night's biggest drama unfolded as two-time champion Peter Wright suffered a stunning 3-1 defeat to German debutant Arno Merk. Wright, who had arrived at the oche in a Santa Claus outfit, had boldly predicted he would win the tournament, but his confidence proved misplaced.
His performance was well below par, averaging a meagre 79.20, and Merk capitalised fully. The result not only ends Wright's campaign but also denies fans a dream third-round clash between Wright and Van Gerwen, which would have been a repeat of the 2020 final.
"I am stunned, I can't believe it, I just beat a legend," an elated Merk said on stage. "I am early in my work, so I am really happy."
The shocks continued as sixth seed Danny Noppert, considered an outside title bet, was also sent packing. He fell in a sudden-death leg to world number 86 Justin Hood in what was instantly hailed as a classic encounter.
Anderson Rolls Back the Years
In stark contrast to the fallen seeds, Gary Anderson produced a vintage performance to dispatch Connor Scutt. The Scot, the last player to successfully defend this title back in 2015 and 2016, rolled back the years with a spectacular average of 105.41, peppering the board with nine 180s.
Elsewhere, Callan Rydz, Jermaine Wattimena, and Ryan Meikle also booked their places in the next round, ensuring a mix of established names and emerging talent will feature after the Christmas break.
The tournament at Ally Pally continues to deliver high drama, proving that reputations count for little once the darting action begins. With Van Gerwen back in the groove and the field narrowing, the path to the title in January is becoming ever clearer.
