Van Gerwen Advances, Wright Crashes Out at PDC World Championship

Michael van Gerwen produced a commanding performance to defeat William O'Connor 3-1 and advance to the third round of the PDC World Championship. The three-time champion, who struggled in his opening match, showed his class with a display that reminded fans of his credentials after a difficult year.

Van Gerwen remains a contender for the title, with Luke Littler and Luke Humphries considered the leading contenders. However, Peter Wright's campaign ended in disappointment as he lost 3-1 to debutant Arno Merk. Wright, dressed in a Santa outfit, had confidently predicted victory in the tournament but averaged just 79.20 in a poor performance.

Merk, ranked 86th, expressed his shock and delight after the win. “I am stunned, I can’t believe it, I just beat a legend, I am so happy,” he said. The result denied a potential third-round clash between Wright and Van Gerwen, a repeat of the 2020 final.

Gary Anderson rolled back the years with a vintage display, averaging 105.41 and hitting nine 180s to defeat Connor Scutt. The Scot, the last man to defend the title in 2015 and 2016, showed similar form to his peak years.

Danny Noppert became the biggest casualty so far, losing to Justin Hood in a sudden-death leg. Other winners included Callan Rydz, Jermaine Wattimena and Ryan Meikle.
