Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has taken aim at the club's domestic rivals after their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev. The Spanish giants secured their 13th European title, with Gareth Bale scoring a stunning brace either side of a Sadio Mane equaliser.
Speaking after the match, Van Dijk refused to dwell on goalkeeper Loris Karius's costly errors, instead focusing on Liverpool's achievements this season. 'Of course we should be proud of ourselves. All the teams in England want to be in our position right now,' he told talkSPORT.
'They act like they're happy, but I think they should be jealous! We were here, unfortunately we lost, but I think we need to take this to next season and make sure we do even better than we did this year.'
Liverpool had started strongly before Mohamed Salah was forced off with a shoulder injury following a challenge with Real's Sergio Ramos. Karius's mistake allowed Karim Benzema to open the scoring, and despite Mane's equaliser, Bale's overhead kick and a late blunder from Karius sealed Liverpool's fate.
