A severe cold snap has forced the postponement of more than a dozen football matches across the English Football League today, as snow and icy conditions create unsafe playing surfaces.
Which Football Matches Are Off Today?
The referee called off the Championship clash between Sheffield United and Oxford United following a pitch inspection at Bramall Lane. The official cited dangerous frozen patches on the pitch, deeming it a risk to player safety.
In another Championship fixture, Portsmouth's home game against Ipswich Town at Fratton Park was also postponed. An 11am inspection on Sunday confirmed the surface was unplayable, with temperatures failing to rise enough to thaw the ground.
The wintry weather has also decimated the League One and League Two schedules. In League One, both Doncaster Rovers vs Luton Town and Rotherham United vs Mansfield Town have been called off. Both decisions were made due to frozen pitches and hazardous conditions around the stadiums.
Extensive League Two Postponements
The disruption is most widespread in League Two, where a significant number of fixtures have succumbed to the weather. The following games have all been postponed:
- Barnet vs Crewe Alexandra
- Barrow vs Bristol Rovers
- Bromley vs Oldham Athletic
- Colchester United vs Accrington Stanley
- Harrogate Town vs Swindon Town
- Newport County vs Tranmere Rovers
- Notts County vs Gillingham
- Salford City vs Shrewsbury Town
- Walsall vs Fleetwood Town
When Will The Postponed Fixtures Be Played?
As of now, there is no confirmed schedule for the rearranged matches. However, clubs and league officials will be looking at the calendar to find new dates. There are numerous free midweek slots available in the coming months, with January, February, March, and April all offering potential windows to reschedule the vital fixtures.
Despite the chaos in the EFL, the Premier League has so far avoided any weather-related cancellations on Sunday. All six top-flight matches, including the high-profile meetings between Leeds United and Manchester United, and Manchester City versus Chelsea, are currently scheduled to proceed as planned.
