Tuchel's World Cup Warning: Foden's England Spot in Jeopardy After Poor Form
Tuchel Warns Foden Over World Cup Place After England Struggles

Tuchel Delivers Bleak World Cup Warning to Foden After England Audition Fails

England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a brutal World Cup warning to Phil Foden, casting serious doubt on the Manchester City forward's place in the squad for this summer's tournament. Tuchel admitted that Foden is "not guaranteed" a spot because he is clearly "struggling" to perform on the pitch, both internationally and at club level.

Foden's Form Crisis Puts World Cup Dreams at Risk

The 25-year-old Foden, who has earned 49 caps for England, started in the team's final Wembley warm-up friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. However, he was substituted before the hour mark in both matches, failing to make a significant impact as England lost to Japan and drew with Uruguay.

Tuchel revealed that Foden was "excellent in training and in camp" but lamented his inability to translate that form into match situations. "He tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch," Tuchel said. "Obviously he didn't have a lot of minutes for City recently. Then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training and I thought he will just surprise us and will play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact."

Tuchel's Candid Admission on Squad Selection

When questioned about whether he could select a player who is struggling on the pitch, Tuchel responded bluntly: "I can, I can! The question will be if we will." This remark underscores the precarious position Foden finds himself in, with Tuchel adding, "Well, it's not a guarantee that he will come."

Foden's decline is particularly stark given his previous highs. He went to Euro 2024 on the back of what was described as the season of his life but failed to deliver his best performances. Since then, he has battled with form and fitness issues, making 26 Premier League appearances for Manchester City this season—including five as a substitute—and managing only seven goals and three assists.

Intense Competition for England Places

The competition for places in England's attacking midfield roles is fiercer than ever, further jeopardising Foden's chances. Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Cole Palmer are all vying for the No.10 position, with Eberechi Eze also in contention. This crowded field means Tuchel will likely have to leave at least one big name out of the World Cup squad, and Foden is increasingly seen as the most vulnerable.

Despite the disappointing results in the friendlies, Tuchel insisted he has taken valuable lessons from the matches. "I learn all the time. I learn from every training session and I learn from how the squad is together and I learn from the players react to the game plan and how they adapt," he said. "How quick they can learn and how quick they can adapt and how they can put it on the pitch. Everything is a learning."

As the World Cup approaches, Foden faces a critical period to rediscover his form and convince Tuchel that he deserves a place on the plane. With his spot no longer secure at Manchester City either, the pressure is mounting on one of England's most talented players to deliver when it matters most.
