Thomas Tuchel has expressed a bullish outlook on England's prospects for winning the upcoming World Cup, following the announcement of his new contract extension with the national team. The German manager has agreed to remain in charge until 2028, putting to rest fears that he might be tempted by a return to club football, specifically amid links to the managerial vacancy at Manchester United.
Contract Clarity Boosts World Cup Preparation
The Football Association confirmed Tuchel's extended commitment, which comes after concerns that Manchester United had identified him as a prime candidate for their top job at Old Trafford. Tuchel believes this clarity provides a significant boost for the Three Lions as they head into the summer tournament, emphasising that his focus has never wavered from the national team.
No Distractions from Club Speculation
In a recent statement, Tuchel addressed the speculation directly, stating, 'I'm not sure if they (the FA) were worried. There was no reason to be worried because I was obviously totally focused through the qualification period and right after that we started the talks.' He added that the contract discussions were straightforward, with both parties fully committed to the extension from the outset.
Tuchel highlighted the importance of this decision, noting, 'It was very important that we didn't do it just to have calmness during the World Cup, but it's a welcome side effect. Now it's clear, and clarity is always good. We will not get distracted by it.' While acknowledging the possibility of a future return to club management, he firmly ruled it out for at least the next two-and-a-half years.
Confidential Talks and Future Ambitions
When questioned about whether he had engaged in discussions with any clubs, Tuchel maintained confidentiality but reiterated his dedication to England. He said, 'Confidential. But I was very committed to the idea after November to stay, and the FA was as well.' This commitment underscores his long-term vision for the team.
Looking ahead, England are set to face Uruguay and Japan in their final pre-tournament friendlies next month, before departing for a training camp in Florida. Tuchel expressed added positivity about the squad's improvement, which has bolstered his confidence in their potential success.
Belief in Competing for Titles
Tuchel emphasised the team's collective belief, stating, 'We believe. Of course we believe. We know how difficult it is, and of course some other countries will believe as well, but we believe that we can play a strong role – and we will go for it.' He further outlined their ambitions, adding, 'We want to compete for all titles, but we are very aligned in the way we want it, and that was the best feeling you can have as a coach.' This unified approach and clear contract terms set a positive tone as England prepare for the World Cup challenges ahead.
