Thomas Tuchel has agreed a new two-year contract to remain as England manager until after Euro 2028, snubbing a potential move to Manchester United. The Football Association is expected to confirm the deal before the Nations League draw in Brussels, which Tuchel is attending.
The German coach, who took over in January 2025, has surprised himself with how much he enjoys the role. He led England to a perfect World Cup qualifying campaign, has embraced life in London, and is a regular at St George's Park and Premier League matches. Tuchel has overcome the frustration of missing training sessions by engaging with players via phone and Zoom.
Despite controversies, including a public remark about Jude Bellingham's behaviour being 'repulsive' to his mother, Tuchel's tenure has been largely positive. In November, he expressed his happiness, stating, 'It is a lot of fun.'
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham, a strong supporter, believes Tuchel is an elite coach whose passion has impressed the federation. The new deal removes distractions about Tuchel's future ahead of the World Cup, avoiding a repeat of past issues with Fabio Capello's contract extension.
Manchester United had expressed interest, having interviewed Tuchel two years ago, but the manager was unimpressed by the process. With Michael Carrick currently as interim, the door for Tuchel at Old Trafford is now closed, securing his future with England.
