Joe Cole has revealed that England's lacklustre World Cup performance against DR Congo prompted him to consider Thomas Tuchel's position as manager. The former Three Lions midfielder joked that he contemplated appointing Eddie Howe during the first half of the Round of 32 clash, which saw England fall behind early.
England trailed 1-0 after just seven minutes when Brian Cipenga scored for the African side. Tuchel's team improved after a hydration break, but it took a late brace from Harry Kane to secure a 2-1 victory and avoid a shock defeat. Speaking on Netflix's 'The Rest is Football' show, Cole admitted: 'I was panicking, at one point we were talking who's the next England manager, is it Eddie Howe?'
Cole added that England's reliance on their two best players, Kane and Jude Bellingham, gives them a chance in the tournament despite defensive frailties and Declan Rice being 'a bit off it'. England now face co-hosts Mexico in Mexico City on Monday, where altitude and a raucous atmosphere await.
Tuchel continues to face scrutiny over squad decisions, particularly the omission of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Injuries to right-backs Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah have compounded the issue, with Trevoh Chalobah called up as cover. Despite an unbeaten start, questions remain about Tuchel's approach compared to predecessor Gareth Southgate.
