The chaotic central midfield transfer market this summer has seen exorbitant fees for players like Elliot Anderson's move to Manchester City and Chelsea's pursuit of Jordan Henderson. Amid these inflated prices, Liverpool may have their own solution in 19-year-old Trey Nyoni.
Nyoni's Impressive Display
Nyoni showcased his abilities in Liverpool's 4-2 preseason victory over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday night. Playing as the deepest midfielder under Andoni Iraola in the second half, he completed 86% of his passes (42 out of 49), often finding Dominik Szoboszlai in advanced areas. He also created the most chances (three) and recorded joint-most defensive contributions (five) during his 45 minutes on the pitch.
The caveat applies that Sunderland fielded a young XI in the second half, but Nyoni's performance was nonetheless encouraging. He has now played under three different Liverpool managers despite only 20 competitive appearances for the Reds.
Midfield Depth and Transfer Savings
With Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch still absent due to World Cup duty, Wataru Endo injured, and Curtis Jones having played the first half, Nyoni stepped into a crucial role. Iraola, who arrived at Liverpool declaring every player "like a new signing," may count on Nyoni as a first-team player.
Although Nyoni made 14 appearances last season, he often watched from the bench while his friend Rio Ngumoha made an impact. Talk of a Championship loan move persisted, but Iraola's options in midfield already look strong, potentially saving Liverpool from a costly transfer for a similar player.
If Liverpool did not have Nyoni, they might be seeking to sign someone with his qualities for a significant fee.
