Tottenham's Johan Lange Defends Quiet Transfer Window and Backs Interim Boss Tudor

Tottenham Hotspur's sporting director, Johan Lange, has publicly defended the club's lack of activity in the final weeks of the winter transfer window. In a media briefing held on Friday, Lange addressed concerns over the sparse recruitment, while also revealing that interim manager Igor Tudor could be appointed to the role on a permanent basis if his tenure proves successful.

Rationale Behind the Transfer Strategy

Lange provided a detailed explanation for Tottenham's restrained approach during the January transfer period. He pointed to the new European competition format as a significant factor that altered the dynamics of the market. 'I personally believe the new European format changed the dynamic a little,' Lange stated. 'You are playing two very competitive matches in January, with the fact that not only us but a lot of teams have what they would say is too many injuries.'

He emphasized that the availability of impactful players was severely limited. 'That meant that in January very few players who could make a difference for us now or in the future were available,' Lange explained. 'And then it's back to the point even though the squad is too short, we still have players we are unable to register for the Champions League last 16. So, to bring in players that cannot help us now or we don't believe have potential for the future, that unfortunately for me doesn't make sense.'

Igor Tudor's Interim Appointment and Future Prospects

Lange also shed light on the decision to appoint Igor Tudor as interim manager, despite his lack of Premier League experience. Tudor, who is no stranger to mid-season arrivals and challenging positions, will face a tough test with at least 11 players unavailable for Sunday's crucial match against rivals Arsenal.

'We interviewed a few interim candidates. Igor impressed us very, very much in the interview,' Lange revealed. 'If you come in here on the Monday and you are playing at the weekend, you need to build relationships with the players immediately. You need to come in to build relationships but of course assess the style of the club immediately. He has shown that with great success, not only once but a few times, to come into that.'

Lange highlighted Tudor's reputation and career achievements as key factors in his selection. 'That is one of the reasons why we believe he is the best candidate here now but of course also with his reputation and what he's done in his career. Of course if things go well, he could be here for a long time.'

Squad Challenges and Internal Resolutions

The club has been grappling with significant injury woes, having lost nine players last month. Their only major signing in January was Conor Gallagher in a £34.7 million deal on January 14, with 19-year-old left-back Souza being the sole addition to an already threadbare squad.

Amidst these challenges, Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has twice expressed his frustration publicly on social media in 2026. Lange addressed this issue directly, stating, 'Romero is here, he is our captain, he is here on a long-term contract with the club. I think we have been clear as a club that we have dealt with that internally and now it is about being together.'

Lange's comments underscore a strategic, albeit cautious, approach from Tottenham's management, focusing on long-term planning over short-term fixes, while placing faith in Tudor's ability to navigate the immediate hurdles.
