Tottenham Edge Closer to Roberto De Zerbi Managerial Appointment

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of naming Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, according to recent reports. This development effectively ends speculation, at least for the immediate future, regarding a potential return for former boss Mauricio Pochettino to the North London club.

Pochettino's Commitment to the United States National Team

Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently out of contract with US Soccer after this summer's co-hosted World Cup, has publicly expressed his openness to remaining in his role. The Argentine manager stated, "I think everyone knows that I am committed with the national team here. We are open. We don't have contract for the future, but why not if we are happy and the federation is happy?"

Pochettino, 54, confirmed that he has not held discussions with Tottenham or Real Madrid, another club to which he has been linked. Reflecting on his time at Spurs, he described it as "one of my best experiences in my life" but acknowledged the challenges awaiting the new manager.

De Zerbi Emerges as Tottenham's Primary Target

Roberto De Zerbi, the 46-year-old Italian manager, has become the frontrunner for the Tottenham job following his departure from Marseille in February. Spurs entered advanced negotiations with De Zerbi shortly after parting ways with interim manager Igor Tudor.

The club is reportedly preparing a long-term contract for De Zerbi, pinning their hopes on the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager to steer the team through both immediate and future challenges. Tottenham's decision to pursue De Zerbi comes amid a period of uncertainty, with the team facing a difficult run of form.

Pochettino's Assessment of Tottenham's Situation

Despite his affection for the club, Pochettino offered a candid view of the crisis De Zerbi is set to inherit. He remarked, "I am sure they're going to stay up, with coach or without coach because of the players, because I think Tottenham have unbelievable players and then it's a club with - the fans that are going to make everything to create that energy to win. Of course that is going to be tough because the synergy and the dynamic is difficult."

Pochettino, who was sacked by Tottenham in 2019, has been in charge of the United States national team since September 2024. He admitted that the scale of the task with the US team has been greater than anticipated, calling it a "massive challenge" but expressing excitement about the future potential of soccer in the country.

World Cup Context and Future Prospects

The United States will compete in Group D at the upcoming World Cup, facing Paraguay, Australia, and either Turkey or Kosovo. Having reached the round of 16 in the previous tournament, losing 3-1 to the Netherlands, the team aims to build on that performance under Pochettino's guidance.

As Tottenham finalise their managerial appointment, the focus shifts to how De Zerbi will navigate the club's current struggles and whether Pochettino will indeed commit his long-term future to US Soccer beyond the World Cup.
