Tottenham Hotspur manager Igor Tudor was absent from his post-match media responsibilities following a crushing 3-0 home defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest, due to a family bereavement. Assistant manager Bruno Saltor took his place to address the press after the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Match Details and Tudor's Absence
The Press Association has reported that Tudor was informed of the family bereavement immediately after the full-time whistle. This personal tragedy meant that Saltor had to step in to reflect on what could prove to be a pivotal and damaging defeat for Spurs in their battle to avoid relegation.
This loss extends Tottenham's winless run in the Premier League to a staggering thirteen matches, leaving them languishing in 17th position, just a single point above West Ham United. The result has intensified the pressure on Tudor, who has now lost five of his seven matches in charge since taking over.
A Dramatic Collapse at Home
The match itself saw a dramatic collapse from the home side. After a rare positive week that included a spirited draw at Liverpool and a morale-boosting 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid, Tottenham were greeted by an estimated 10,000 fervent fans. However, the team crumbled after a relatively positive first half.
Nottingham Forest took a crucial lead just before half-time through Igor Jesus's 45th-minute opener. Tottenham's performance unravelled completely following Tudor's double substitution at the interval. Morgan Gibbs-White doubled Forest's advantage in the 62nd minute, and Taiwo Awoniyi tapped in a third with only three minutes remaining, sparking a mass exodus of home supporters from the stands.
Assistant Manager Bruno Saltor's Comments
Speaking on behalf of the absent manager, Bruno Saltor addressed the media. "It's a personal family issue and obviously it's a difficult moment for him," Saltor stated regarding Tudor's situation.
Reflecting on the match, Saltor added, "First half, the first 44 minutes I thought were good, really good, creating chances, getting into the box. In the second half, probably we were unable to deal with the weight of the game." He also confirmed that the half-time substitutions of Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence for Destiny Udogie and Lucas Bergvall were purely "tactical" decisions made by the under-pressure Tudor.
Mounting Pressure and Managerial Uncertainty
The defeat leaves Tottenham facing the very real possibility of their first relegation since 1977. Tudor's future is now under intense scrutiny given the club's precarious league position.
Saltor claimed to feel the "support" of the club's hierarchy, but with a three-week break until Tottenham's next fixture, the club's leadership faces a critical decision. Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, sporting director Johan Lange, and the majority owners ENIC, run by the Lewis Family Trust, must now contemplate whether to change managers once again.
"We feel the support from everyone at the club and we're just focusing on how we can help players," Saltor insisted. "Obviously, a lot of players, they're leaving now for the internationals and as soon as they get back, get back on the train, come and try to get everyone up to speed and prepare for the next game."
Nottingham Forest's Satisfactory Week
For Nottingham Forest and their manager Vitor Pereira, this victory provided a satisfactory conclusion to a gruelling week. The team had played 120 minutes on Thursday before defeating FC Midtjylland on penalties in the Europa League last 16.
"A good week for us," Pereira said. "We must keep our mentality and we proved it today. It's not about Tottenham, it's not about West Ham, it's not about Leeds and the teams that are here fighting against us. It is about us and what we want to be as a team."
Pereira was also reminded of a painful previous visit to Tottenham in September, when his Wolverhampton Wanderers side conceded a last-gasp equaliser in a 1-1 draw, a result that ultimately contributed to his dismissal from Molineux later that season.
"I remember this and will never forget this game in my life because it was last second and we conceded," Pereira added. "(Joao) Palhinha scored, but you need to be resilient. And I came again here believing we can win the game and we did it."
