Ivan Toney has suggested that Saudi Pro League officials are favouring Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in the title race after his side Al-Ahli were denied three penalty appeals in a 1-1 draw against Al-Fayha. The former Brentford striker scored his 27th league goal of the season, but Al-Ahli failed to close the gap on league leaders Al-Nassr, who now sit four points clear with a game in hand.
Toney fumed at the officiating in a post-match interview, saying: 'The big talking point was the two penalties. It's clear as day. I don't know what more you want him to do? Pick the ball up with two hands, are you going to give a penalty then or not?' He also claimed the referee told the players to focus on the AFC Champions League instead of discussing the decisions.
The 28-year-old then took to Instagram to share clips of the contentious moments, writing: 'Two of these actions went to VAR and one didn’t. It’s actually crazy how you can miss things like this in crucial moments or choose to turn a blind eye.' He added: 'Without saying too much that may get me in trouble, it’s clear what’s being influenced here!!!'
When asked who he felt was benefiting from the decisions, Toney replied: 'We know who. Who are we chasing?' He concluded that if decisions went his team's way they would have a good chance, but if they continued like this it would be tough. All four clubs mentioned, including Al-Ahli and Al-Nassr, are owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
