Pep Guardiola has rejected a lucrative offer to become the head coach of the Italian national team, according to reports. The former Manchester City manager was approached by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) as they seek a foreign coach for the first time since the 1960s, following Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup – the third consecutive time they have missed the tournament.
The 55-year-old, who left City at the end of last season after a decade in charge, is said to have responded with: 'Thank you, I'm honoured, but I don't feel like it right now.' Guardiola is determined to take time for himself and his family after managing Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City.
Paolo Maldini, the legendary defender and newly appointed technical director of the FIGC, confirmed talks with Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti, who currently manages Brazil. The offer was rumoured to be worth €20 million.
Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney has suggested England should consider Guardiola if he is available, following the Three Lions' semi-final defeat to Argentina under Thomas Tuchel. 'If Pep Guardiola is available, then maybe you go and get him,' Rooney said on his show, though he stressed Tuchel remains a top-class manager.
