Liverpool Midfielder Szoboszlai Faces Fan Fury After Man City Defeat
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has been heavily criticised by the club's supporters following his visible frustration towards travelling fans after a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City. The FA Cup quarter-final loss at the Etihad Stadium ended Liverpool's cup campaign in devastating fashion, with the Hungarian international's post-match behaviour becoming a major talking point.
Disastrous Day at the Etihad
Arne Slot's Liverpool side suffered a comprehensive defeat against their Premier League rivals, with Erling Haaland's first-half hat-trick putting the game beyond reach before the hour mark. The misery was compounded when Mohamed Salah had a late penalty saved, ensuring the Reds left Manchester without any consolation from a dismal performance.
Liverpool had been allocated 8,000 tickets for the quarter-final clash, but the vast majority of supporters had departed long before the final whistle, leaving only a few hundred hardy fans remaining to witness the players' post-match acknowledgement.
Szoboszlai's Controversial Reaction
As Szoboszlai and his teammates approached the remaining supporters, the 25-year-old midfielder appeared increasingly agitated by the criticism directed at the players from the stands. Video footage shows Szoboszlai initially attempting to rally the fans before becoming visibly frustrated.
The Hungarian international stopped applauding, shrugged his shoulders repeatedly, and waved his arms in apparent exasperation. His actions failed to generate the positive response he seemed to expect, and teammate Federico Chiesa eventually intervened to guide him away from the situation.
Social Media Backlash
The incident quickly gained traction on social media platforms, with Liverpool fans expressing their displeasure at what many perceived as arrogance from the highly-paid professional. One supporter highlighted the financial sacrifice involved in following the team: "Do these players have a clue the cost of going to all these games after working hard all week? The overwhelming majority of fans spend a large portion of their working class wages watching this, and these millionaire players have the cheek to ask for more support."
Another fan was more direct in their criticism: "F***ing such an arrogant player. How can he be prepared to kick the paying travelling supporters?" A third comment on social media platform X emphasised: "Travelling fans pay your wages, clap and get down the tunnel. Theatrics don't work with the supporters."
Post-Match Comments
Following the incident, Szoboszlai spoke to broadcasters and offered a critical assessment of Liverpool's performance. "The mentality wasn't there enough," the midfielder told TNT Sports. "None of us were there to be honest as much as we could. It's a hard time but we have to stick together. On Wednesday, there is another chance but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end."
Szoboszlai specifically highlighted what he perceived as a lack of fighting spirit from his teammates during the comprehensive defeat.
Looking Ahead
The controversy comes at a difficult time for Liverpool, who must quickly regroup for their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. The Reds then return to Premier League action with a home fixture against Fulham next Saturday as they attempt to salvage something from what has been a disappointing season.
Manager Arne Slot faces increasing pressure following the heavy defeat, with questions being raised about his ability to turn around Liverpool's fortunes during what has become a challenging campaign for the historic club.
