Liverpool produced a commanding display to beat Marseille 3-0 at the Stade Vélodrome, moving closer to automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a clever free-kick, before an own goal from Jeremie Frimpong and a stoppage-time strike from substitute Cody Gakpo sealed a deserved victory.
The result was a welcome boost for Arne Slot's side, who have struggled to convert possession into goals in recent Premier League outings. Liverpool dominated from the outset, pressing relentlessly and restricting the hosts to few clear chances. Joe Gomez deputised impressively for the absent Ibrahima Konaté alongside Virgil van Dijk, who made his 350th appearance for the club.
Mohamed Salah returned to the starting lineup following his brief absence for the Africa Cup of Nations, and was involved in several promising attacks. The Egypt international saw an audacious volley fly just over the bar after a counter-attack. Szoboszlai broke the deadlock in the first half, spotting Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli off his line and curling a low free-kick under the wall and inside the post.
Marseille improved after the interval, with Mason Greenwood forcing a fine save from Alisson and Hamed Traoré missing a good chance. But Liverpool doubled their lead when Frimpong's cross was turned into his own net by a Marseille defender. Gakpo added a third in stoppage time to complete the scoring. Slot's side have now won nine of their last 11 European away games.
