SWPL Chief McIntyre Admits Envy Over Lionesses' Success as Scotland Aims to Inspire Nation
SWPL chief admits Lionesses jealousy as Scotland seeks inspiration

Fiona McIntyre, head of the Scottish Women's Premier League (SWPL), has openly admitted feeling a pang of jealousy towards the success of England's Lionesses, as she calls for Scotland's national team to ignite the same level of passion and support.

In a candid interview, McIntyre acknowledged the transformative impact the Lionesses have had on women's football in England, from record-breaking attendances to mainstream media coverage. "I'm not going to lie—when I look at what the Lionesses have achieved, there's definitely envy," she confessed.

Scotland's Challenge: Building a Legacy

While England's Euro 2022 triumph and subsequent World Cup performances have elevated the women's game to new heights, Scotland's national team has struggled to replicate that momentum. McIntyre emphasised the need for Scotland to create its own inspiring narrative to engage fans and attract investment.

"We need our national team to capture the imagination of the country," she said. "It's not just about results on the pitch—it's about creating heroes young girls and boys can look up to."

Grassroots Growth Key to Long-Term Success

McIntyre pointed to the SWPL's growing attendances and improved professionalism as positive signs, but stressed that sustained success depends on strengthening grassroots participation and improving pathways for young talent.

"The foundations are being laid," she added. "With the right support, Scotland can develop its own golden generation that inspires the nation."
