Sutton slams 'piccolo' Penrice penalty as Rangers win

Chris Sutton has accused James Penrice of playing 'Nick Walsh like a piccolo' to win Rangers a penalty against St Mirren.

With less than 20 minutes on the clock, the away side were awarded a spot kick when AEK Athens loanee Penrice went down in the area under a challenge from Samuel Ramos.

Following a VAR review, whistler Walsh then pointed to the spot, with Ryan Naderi stepping up to break the deadlock and net his ninth goal of the season in all competitions.

Pundits split on the decision

Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of the game, Celtic hero and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton totally disagreed with the decision. He said: "I think we all agree that it was the wrong decision. There has to be sufficient contact. James Penrice has played Nick Walsh like a piccolo."

"Ramos is steaming back but how much contact is there if any? It's absolutely minimal. Let's not hide behind a clear and obvious error. That's absolutely not a penalty."

Ibrox legend Kris Boyd was also on punditry duty and added: "I don't think there is much in it but I can see why it's been given.

"There is no doubt it's a lazy challenge. Does he potentially stand on his foot yet? Is there potential for a touch on the thigh yes? For me I'm not sure it's enough but we can't criticise referees for not making decisions."

Co-commentator's view

James McFadden was the same broadcaster's co-commentator at the SMISA Stadium, and commented: "No, I don't know how much or (if there is) any contact there."

"It doesn't get better any time you see it. He brushes his thigh and I don't think we should see penalty kicks given for that."
