England's Most Devoted Fan Makes Drastic Sacrifice for World Cup Dream
Andy Milne, widely recognised as England's number one superfan, has taken the extraordinary step of putting his second home on the market to fund an epic seven-week journey following the national team at this summer's World Cup. The retired teacher, who became a cult figure during the tournament in Qatar, is selling his property in Northwich, Cheshire, for £350,000 to cover the substantial costs of his American adventure.
A Decade of Dedication and a Viral Moment
The 62-year-old first captured public attention in Qatar when a photograph of him celebrating England's 3-0 victory over Senegal with a replica Jules Rimet trophy appeared in the Mirror. The image quickly went viral, with many observers noting his resemblance to former England manager Steve McClaren. This marked his ninth World Cup following the men's team, having previously attended eight tournaments plus the women's World Cup in Australia in 2023.
"I definitely want to see the whole tournament," Milne declared. "I am going to the US on June 3 and will be there for seven weeks. So it will cost quite a lot of money."
Meticulous Planning and Cost-Cutting Measures
Despite the significant financial commitment, Milne remains pragmatic about his expenses. "I always try to do things cheaply if I can," he explained. "I will couch surf where possible; I am lucky to have friends in Mexico, Dallas, and Vancouver. Travel costs are expensive; I bought international flights early because you can change them even if departure times change by 10 minutes."
His itinerary includes being present in Dallas for England's crucial opening match against Croatia on June 17. Beyond the football, Milne plans a road trip to Memphis to visit Graceland, Elvis Presley's former home, and will enjoy various tribute acts along the way.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Recognition
Milne's football fandom spans more than four decades, beginning with his first World Cup experience in Spain in 1982 at just 19 years old. His remarkable journey is documented in his forthcoming memoir, "That World Cup Guy," which chronicles everything from sleeping rough in Spain to mingling with fans on the streets of Rio. The book is scheduled for release on May 25 and is currently available for pre-order.
"It is going on the market because I'm selling it to go to the World Cup," Milne stated about his second home, which he had maintained as a rental property for 27 years. "The last tournament in Qatar was a present to myself, I had been saving for years. We have had a second home for 27 years so it felt like the right time to cash in."
The Trophy That Brings Joy and Recognition
Milne's replica World Cup trophy, affectionately named "Sophie" after his 27-year-old daughter, has become an iconic symbol at England matches. "I get recognised everywhere and, even by Scotland fans," he revealed. "The Scots always buy me drinks. One got me a Pina Colada for some reason, another bought me a rum and lime."
His dedication has earned him "top capper" status with the official England fans club, guaranteeing him tickets for every England group game in the United States and priority access all the way to the final. Reflecting on his viral moment, he joked: "I don't really think that I look like Steve McClaren. But I did on that picture!"
This summer's journey represents the culmination of a lifetime passion that has seen Milne travel the world supporting England, creating memories with his daughters Laila and Sophie, and becoming a beloved figure among football fans globally.
