Sunderland Striker Brian Brobbey Targeted in Alleged £130,000 Extortion Plot
Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey was at the centre of a harrowing alleged extortion plot, where a convicted criminal and drug dealer reportedly demanded £130,000 from him, threatening his family and shooting a close childhood friend. The 24-year-old Dutch forward, who joined Sunderland from Ajax in a £21.5 million deal last September, faced this traumatic ordeal over two and a half years while still playing in Amsterdam.
The Criminal Encounter and Escalating Threats
Brobbey's nightmare began in December 2022 at the Valhalla music festival in Amsterdam, where he was approached by a notorious gangster known only as Jeymon A in Dutch court documents. The criminal allegedly claimed to have resolved issues with gangsters in Utrecht on Brobbey's behalf and demanded payment. When Brobbey refused, the intimidation tactics escalated dramatically.
Key incidents included:
- Fireworks being dropped through the letterbox of his mother-in-law's home.
- An explosive thrown at Brobbey's car.
- His sister-in-law's car being set on fire.
The situation reached a critical point when Brobbey's childhood friend arranged to meet Jeymon A and was shot in the buttock and small intestine, requiring emergency surgery. The friend later messaged that he "took a bullet for him (Brobbey)." Shortly after, Brobbey received a message demanding €150,000 (£130,000) or else "we’re going to do it differently." There is no evidence that he paid the ransom.
Legal Proceedings and Brobbey's Response
Jeymon A has been jailed for 10 years for the attempted manslaughter of Brobbey's friend, as well as possession of a firearm and illegal drugs. He also received a separate nine-year sentence for unrelated drug dealing charges in September 2024. However, he has never been charged with the alleged extortion of Brobbey, with his lawyer, Veerle Hammerstein, stating that police investigations yielded no evidence linking him to the extortion practice.
Throughout this terrifying period, Brobbey managed to keep the ordeal private and continued performing on the pitch, scoring goals for Ajax before his move to Sunderland. He has not been accused of any wrongdoing in the case.
Brobbey's Current Focus and Career
Since joining Sunderland, Brobbey has been a key player, contributing five goals in 21 Premier League appearances this season as the club sits 11th in the table following promotion from the Championship. He is now targeting a place in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup, having not played for his country since 2023. The move to Sunderland provided a fresh start away from the traumatic events in Amsterdam, allowing him to focus on his football career amidst the lingering shadows of his past ordeal.
