Steven Gerrard Offered Bristol City Job as Championship Return Looms
Steven Gerrard Offered Bristol City Job

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly on the verge of returning to management after being offered the job at Championship side Bristol City. The 45-year-old former Rangers and Aston Villa boss has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in 2025 and is eager to get back into the dugout as soon as possible.

Bristol City's Approach

According to reports, Bristol City have tabled an 'enticing and attractive project' to Gerrard, aiming to persuade him to take charge at Ashton Gate. The club appointed Roy Hodgson as interim manager last month after sacking Gerhard Struber, and they are now looking for a permanent successor. Gerrard is said to be open to managing in the Championship and is keen to return to management promptly.

Burnley Also Interested

Burnley are another club reportedly monitoring Gerrard's situation. The Clarets are preparing for another Championship campaign following their relegation from the Premier League, and manager Scott Parker's position is expected to be reviewed at the end of the season.

Gerrard's Managerial Career

Gerrard's last managerial role in England was at Aston Villa, where he was sacked after less than a year in charge in 2022. Prior to that, he enjoyed success at Rangers, guiding them to the Scottish Premiership title in his third season at Ibrox. After leaving Villa, he took over at Al-Ettifaq but left in 2025.

Following in Lampard's Footsteps

Gerrard's former England teammate Frank Lampard has revitalised his career in the Championship. Lampard took over at Coventry City in November 2024 and led them to the play-offs in his first season. This term, Coventry secured automatic promotion and won the Championship title. Lampard's success has not gone unnoticed among Gerrard's circle, and it may have influenced Gerrard's willingness to consider a Championship move.
