Spurs Hero Tony Galvin Recovering From Stroke

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that former winger Tony Galvin is recovering after suffering a stroke. The 69-year-old made 273 appearances for the club during the 1980s, winning back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982.

Galvin started all four FA Cup final matches in those years, including the replays against Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers. The 1981 replay was famously decided by Ricky Villa's solo goal, which began after a trademark Galvin run down the left wing.

He also played in both legs of the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht, which Spurs won on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw. Galvin was substituted in the second half of the second leg.

Despite representing England at schoolboy level, Galvin earned 29 caps for the Republic of Ireland and played in all three group matches at Euro 1988 under Jack Charlton, including the famous 1-0 victory over England.

After leaving Spurs in 1987, he played for Sheffield Wednesday and later Swindon Town under former teammate Ossie Ardiles, whom he also served as assistant at Swindon and Newcastle United.

Spurs posted on X: 'Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke. We're all behind you, Tony.'
