Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Tony Galvin is on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke, the Premier League club has confirmed.
A Distinguished Playing Career
Tony Galvin, now 69 years old, was a vital component of Tottenham's successful team in the 1980s. He made an impressive 273 appearances for the North London club, securing major honours during his tenure.
Galvin was instrumental in Spurs' back-to-back FA Cup triumphs in 1981 and 1982. Both finals required replays; the first against Manchester City was famously decided by Ricky Villa's spectacular solo goal, an attack that originated from one of Galvin's characteristic bursts down the left flank.
His contribution to the club's European success was equally significant. Galvin started both legs of the 1984 UEFA Cup final against Anderlecht. The tie ended 2-2 on aggregate, with Tottenham eventually winning 4-3 on penalties after Galvin had been substituted during the second leg.
International Allegiance and Later Career
Despite having represented England at schools level, Galvin opted to play for the Republic of Ireland, earning 29 international caps.
He featured in all three of Ireland's matches at the 1988 European Championships. This included the historic 1-0 victory over England, a match where a photograph captured Galvin leaving his former Spurs teammate Glenn Hoddle on the ground and Gary Stevens in pursuit.
After departing Tottenham in 1987, Galvin spent two years with Sheffield Wednesday before joining Swindon Town, where he was reunited with his former teammate Ossie Ardiles.
His connection with Ardiles continued into coaching, with Galvin serving as the Argentinian's assistant manager at both Swindon and Newcastle United.
Club Support and Recovery
Tottenham Hotspur publicly shared their support for the club legend via a post on social media platform X.
The club's statement read: "Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke. We're all behind you, Tony."
The message confirms that the former winger is currently in recovery, receiving support from his former club and the wider football community.
