Tottenham Supporters' Trust Issues Damning Statement After Roberto De Zerbi Appointment
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust has issued a strongly worded statement following the club's appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach, expressing profound concerns over the Italian manager's past comments about Mason Greenwood. The Trust warns that this controversial hiring risks creating a damaging divide among supporters at a critical moment when the team faces potential relegation.
Serious Concerns Over Past Comments
The Trust highlights that De Zerbi's remarks about Mason Greenwood, made while the manager was at Marseille, were "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters." In November of last year, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good guy" who had paid a "heavy price," adding that he knew "a totally different person than the one who was described."
These comments refer to Greenwood's legal situation. In October 2022, the footballer was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempted rape, and controlling and coercive behaviour. However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in February 2023, citing "a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light" which meant there was "no realistic prospect of conviction."
Club Values Under Scrutiny
The Trust's statement emphasizes that Tottenham Hotspur has previously committed to challenging instances of violence against women and girls while acting with integrity and upholding club values. They argue that De Zerbi's comments, if left unchecked, "cast a troubling shadow over the values of the Club we love."
"The Club must reassert its commitment to the values that fans hold dear—chief among them equality, respect, and integrity," the statement declares. "With this appointment, communications from the Club and from Mr De Zerbi must clearly and unequivocally reaffirm these values."
Timing and Strategic Failings
The Trust acknowledges the club's urgent need to address its precarious Premier League position, with Spurs facing the prospect of relegation. However, they express disappointment that the club chose De Zerbi over a short-term appointment that could have provided stability before a more thorough summer search.
"Our preference would have been for a short-term appointment of an individual or individuals who understand the Club and can lead the players in the seven battles to come," the statement explains. "There would then have been an opportunity in the summer to attract a wide range of potential applicants with a track record of success in inspiring fans and players."
The Trust attributes this situation to "prolonged strategic failings," noting they have warned for years that the club was heading in this direction. "The lack of timely, sound decision-making has now left options severely compromised," they state.

They reveal that many fans have contacted them urging communication of the strength of feeling, and that they raised concerns directly with the club prior to the announcement.

The statement concludes with a stark assessment of fan confidence in club leadership. According to the Trust's "Five Principles for Spurs ownership," which include Leading with Integrity and Championing Ethical Standards, supporters currently rate performance in this area at just 2.2 out of 10.
"This decision risks further eroding confidence unless addressed with clarity, humility, and decisive action," the Trust warns. "It will take significant effort for many fans to restore their faith in the Club's leadership. That process must begin with transparency, accountability and a renewed commitment to the principles that define Tottenham Hotspur."
While the Trust pledges to continue supporting efforts to preserve the club's Premier League status, they acknowledge that "many fans will do so with a heavy heart."
