Aitana Bonmatí’s extra-time strike sent Spain into the Women’s Euro 2025 final, breaking German resistance after 112 minutes of relentless defending. The Barcelona playmaker’s angled finish was the only goal of a tense semi-final in Zurich, securing Spain’s first-ever victory over Germany in the process.
Germany, managed by Christian Wück, had defended with remarkable bravery, having played 107 minutes of their quarter-final against France with 10 players just days earlier. Despite missing key defenders through injury and suspension, they held Spain at bay until Bonmatí’s moment of individual brilliance.
Spain dominated possession and chances, as expected, but found Germany’s collective resilience a puzzle they could not solve for most of the match. Montse Tomé’s side showed patience, waiting for the right opportunity, and finally broke through when Bonmatí found space and finished from a tight angle.
For Germany, the defeat was harsh but revealed a newfound toughness. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger produced a world-class save to deny Esther González, while Klara Bühl’s tireless running caused problems. However, with only two recognised defenders available, fatigue eventually told.
