The World Cup round of 32 kicks off this afternoon as South Africa takes on tournament co-hosts Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. For the first time in the tournament, it is win or go home, with extra time and penalties potentially deciding the tie.
Group Stage Recap
South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, advanced from their group in second place, edging out South Korea and Czechia. After two red cards in an opening defeat to Mexico, they rebounded with a 1-0 win over South Korea to secure their knockout spot.
Canada also progressed with four points, courtesy of a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar and a draw with Bosnia. This marks Canada's best-ever World Cup campaign, as they had never previously advanced past the group stage in two prior appearances.
First Half Action
The first half ended goalless, but not without drama. Canada coach Jesse Marsch was incensed after a controversial penalty decision went against his side. In stoppage time, Mudau brought down Laryea in the box, but the referee waved play on, awarding a goal kick instead of a penalty.
Canada nearly broke the deadlock just before the break when Bombito's header from a corner was cleared off the line by Modiba, followed by a double save from South African goalkeeper Williams.
Second Half Underway
The second half began with a substitution for South Africa, as Mbatha replaced Mofokeng. Early action saw Mokoena catch a high stud from Buchanan but continue after treatment. Saliba was booked for a cynical tackle on Mudau in the 54th minute.
South Africa mounted a promising attack in the 56th minute, but Canada's resolute defence held firm, and a cross was safely caught by goalkeeper Crepeau.
Knockout Stakes
As the match remains level, the prospect of extra time and penalties looms. A reminder that if the score stays tied after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will follow, and if still necessary, a penalty shootout will decide who advances to the round of 16.
