Emile Smith Rowe Displays Unwavering Arsenal Allegiance During Derby
Former Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe showcased his lasting affection for the Gunners as he watched their emphatic 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby from the Fulham team bus. The 25-year-old, who departed Arsenal in 2024, joined other ex-Gunners in reacting to the match, which saw Arsenal rebound from recent struggles with goals from Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres, each scoring twice to overturn Randal Kolo Muani's first-half strike for Spurs.
Behind-the-Scenes Banter on Fulham Coach
Footage uploaded by Alex Iwobi on his YouTube channel revealed the lively atmosphere aboard the Fulham coach following their 3-1 away win at Sunderland. As the Arsenal-Tottenham clash unfolded on screen, Smith Rowe engaged in playful teasing directed at former Tottenham defender Ryan Sessegnon, who was also present. After Eze opened the scoring for Arsenal, Smith Rowe mimicked the forward's cross celebration, sporting a sly grin that prompted laughter from Iwobi.
Sessegnon initially retaliated when Kolo Muani equalised, exclaiming, "Alex, get this. Get this. Yes. Come on! Hold that." However, as Arsenal dominated the second half, the jibes resumed. Smith Rowe spun around and imitated Gyokeres' celebration, covering his mouth with his hands to mock Sessegnon after Arsenal's second goal. Sessegnon acknowledged the quality of the finish, stating, "That's a great touch and finish. I can't even say anything, that's a great finish," while covering his face in response to Smith Rowe's taunts.
Smith Rowe's Arsenal Legacy and Current Journey
Smith Rowe's actions underscore his deep-rooted connection to Arsenal, where he rose through the youth ranks from under-18s and under-23s to become a key figure in Mikel Arteta's early tenure. Despite loan spells at RB Leipzig and Huddersfield Town, he made 115 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 18 goals and providing 13 assists. Injuries hampered his progress, potentially costing him a continued role at the club, as noted by Arteta upon his departure.
Arteta expressed gratitude for Smith Rowe's contributions, saying in 2024, "It was a very tough decision, obviously, to let Emile go, especially because personally, I feel really grateful for what he did for the club and for me. In that period of time, I think he was instrumental in changing some things around it but in the end, players have to play." He added, "He had a lot of difficult moments as well. A lot of struggles with injuries when we were together and he needed that fresh start. It's normal. We understood that and we let him go."
Since joining Fulham in a deal worth up to £34 million, Smith Rowe has had mixed fortunes, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists in 72 appearances while competing for a starting spot. Yet, his reaction to the North London Derby highlights that, despite wearing Fulham colours, he retains a strong emotional tie to Arsenal, a sentiment cherished by fans who remember his impactful partnership with Bukayo Saka during their emergence.
