Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has underlined the critical importance of securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League following his side's emphatic 3-0 victory away at Marseille on Wednesday evening.
Convincing Victory in France
The Reds delivered a commanding performance in their Champions League group stage fixture at the Stade Vélodrome, securing a result that significantly boosts their prospects of automatic qualification for the knockout phase. This triumph marks only the second occasion this season that Slot's team has defeated a top-tier opponent by a three-goal margin, with the previous instance being a victory over Eintracht Frankfurt back in October.
Goals and Momentum
The scoring was opened by a superb Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick, which was followed by an unfortunate own goal from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. A late strike from substitute Cody Gakpo sealed a comprehensive victory for the visitors. This result propels Liverpool into fourth position in their group, now holding a two-point advantage over ninth-placed Barcelona.
With a home fixture against Qarabag scheduled for next week, the Merseyside club are in a strong position to avoid the play-off round and progress directly into the last sixteen of the competition.
Slot's Post-Match Analysis
"It's very important because we have had to play with the same players because of injuries for most of the season," explained Slot, whose team extended their unbeaten run to an impressive thirteen matches – currently the best such record across Europe's top-five leagues.
"That could be the reason why we have run out of energy in some of the games when we've conceded. I don't think Virgil (van Dijk) has had more than three days off, the same for Ryan (Gravenberch) and others but they constantly show up no matter how many setbacks we've had this season."
The Dutch manager was full of praise for his squad's resilience and professionalism, particularly in a challenging away environment. "It's always very difficult to play Marseille because of their passionate fans and the quality of their players, but what makes it even harder is the quality of their manager. We were prepared for that."
Key Moments and Contrasts
Slot highlighted a pivotal shift in fortune during the match. "On the ball we were controlled but what made the difference this time was that after we had a big chance and hit the post, they had a big chance and put it over: usually this season that goes in. But we were able to make it 2-0, 3-0 and so that makes the perception of the game completely different."
He also drew an interesting comparison with their recent domestic form, noting, "Against Burnley (Saturday's 1-1 draw) we created three or four times more than we did tonight but tonight we scored three."
Salah's Return and Professionalism
The match also marked the return of star forward Mohamed Salah, who had been away for over a month representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. His return followed recent public comments regarding his treatment during a dip in form.
Slot was effusive in his praise for the Egyptian's professionalism. "It says a lot about how big a professional he is that he can be away for more than a month with a different team and be so fit to play 90 for us after one day's training. He was so close to a goal, it would usually be a goal from him, but it didn't harm us because we scored three."
De Zerbi's Disappointment
In contrast, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi was visibly disappointed with his team's display. "We played poorly, conceding a silly goal before half-time," he admitted. "We lost possession too often in the middle because we misunderstood the game, we misjudged their pressing. We had a few chances that we didn't manage well. We still have too many ups and downs in our matches."
As Liverpool prepare for their final group game, the focus remains firmly on securing that coveted top-eight finish, which would represent a significant achievement in Slot's first season at the helm and provide a smoother path in European football's premier club competition.
