Slavko Vincic, the referee who officiated the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, has retired just days after the tournament. The Slovenian FA confirmed the 46-year-old's decision.
In a statement, the Slovenian FA said: "One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vinčić officially concluded his historic refereeing career at the very top of the world."
Historic achievement
Vincic became the first Slovenian head referee to officiate a World Cup final, held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics named him the best referee of the World Cup, and he received the Giulio Campanati award in Italy.
His career highlights include officiating the 2022 Europa League final between Frankfurt and Rangers, and the 2024 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
World Cup matches
During the tournament, Vincic took charge of three matches, including the knockout encounter between Ecuador and Mexico, where he sent off Piero Hincapie after the Arsenal player placed his hand over his mouth while speaking to a Mexico player. He also issued a red card to Argentina's Enzo Fernandez for two bookable offences in the final.
After the final, a melee broke out involving Argentina substitute Leandro Paredes. Vincic battled to separate players, and while Paredes was not dismissed after the final whistle, a FIFA probe was initiated. No conclusive verdict has emerged.
