Sky Sports F1 Commentator David Croft to Miss Only One More Race in 2026
Sky Sports F1 Commentator Croft to Miss Only One More Race

Sky Sports' lead Formula 1 commentator David Croft will miss just one further race this season after this weekend's Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, Mirror Sport can reveal. Croft has established himself as the UK broadcaster's definitive voice of F1 following more than a decade in the role and, for many years, was a constant presence at every race weekend.

Calendar Expansion Leads to Occasional Absences

However, the expansion of the annual calendar to 24 races per season has resulted in even 'Crofty' taking the occasional weekend away. During both the 2024 and 2025 campaigns, he sat out three weekends, missing the Emilia-Romagna, Austrian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix on each occasion.

Harry Benjamin, ordinarily the lead F1 commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live, was drafted in by Sky to fill his boots each time.

Schedule Adjustment for 2026

Croft's schedule this year required adjustment given Imola's absence from the calendar, yet the expectation remained that he would still sit out three Grands Prix. That assumption was thrown into doubt, however, when Benjamin made a curious remark live on air during Friday practice in Barcelona.

Speaking alongside co-commentator Karun Chandhok, Benjamin revealed he would have just one further opportunity to commentate for Sky Sports during the remainder of the season. The comment caught fans off guard, given this marks his first substitute appearance of 2026, with many having anticipated that Sky would require cover for Croft on two more occasions between now and the season finale.

Regional Conflict Alters Plans

But Mirror Sport understands the circumstances have shifted due to the scrapping of the two Middle Eastern rounds that were scheduled for April. Croft had been set to miss the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, with Benjamin poised to deputise for him, until the Jeddah event was axed owing to regional conflict following combined US-Israeli military action against Iran, which sparked retaliatory strikes on neighbouring nations in the area, including Saudi Arabia.

With the race calendar for 2026 now trimmed to 22 rounds, Croft is not anticipated to add any further events to the original three he had planned to sit out this season. This weekend's proceedings in Barcelona mark the second of the three races for which Benjamin was lined up to fill in for Sky, with the third still to come before the year's conclusion.

Croft Enjoys Download Festival

As he had suggested during live coverage in Monaco last week, Croft is spending the Barcelona race weekend at the Download music festival instead. He has already shared multiple photographs on his Instagram account showing himself relishing the performances at the rock festival, which takes place annually at Donington Park, in Leicestershire, best recognised as a motorsport circuit.

The circuit has previously played host to a Formula 1 race: the 1993 European Grand Prix, claimed by Ayrton Senna following a legendary opening lap in which the Brazilian swept past four rivals in treacherous wet conditions.

Donington Park was also once lined up to replace Silverstone as the home of the British Grand Prix from 2010 onwards, but those ambitions collapsed due to insufficient funding for the project.
